Adjustment/renewal for new 10-year life.
Any course that has been previously USATF certified may receive a new certification year and a new 10-year life under any of the following scenarios:
Two new measurements of the course are performed that are no more than 0.08% different in length.
One verification measurement of the course is performed in a single continuous measurement ride from the previously certified start line to the previously certified finish line. The single continuous ride may also be done from the finish to the start.
If the length calculated from that measurement is within 0.08% of the previously certified length, the course is recertified.
If the length is not within 0.08% of the previously certified length, the course must be remeasured completely until two measurements are obtained that are within 0.08% of each other.
A previously certified course is modified, and parts of the old and new course sections are measured to establish the new course route and new start/finish/turn-around locations. Then, a single continuous measurement ride is performed from the start to the finish (or finish to start) using the new course route.
If the length calculated from this measurement ride is within 0.08% of the previously certified course length, the course is recertified.
If the length is not within 0.08% of the previously certified length, the course must be remeasured completely until two measurements are obtained that are within 0.08% of each other.
Note on World Athletics Certifications
The scenarios above apply only to USATF certifications. World Athletics (WA) certifications expire after 5 years and cannot be extended using the single-ride validation method. To obtain a new WA certification (valid for another 5 years), the complete course must always be measured twice to meet WA standards for the US.
